When Jessica Willis left New York City for Los Angeles in early March, she had no idea that what was meant to be a week-long trip would end up spanning almost a full year. “I’ve been out here for eight months with seven days of clothes,” Willis, on the phone in her childhood home in Santa Monica, says with a laugh. Luckily, however, as an in-demand stylist who regularly travelled the globe pre-pandemic, the 36-year-old was already well-accustomed to living out of a suitcase, relying on an edited wardrobe of Bottega Veneta, Lemaire, and Phoebe Philo’s Céline, as well as a similarly curated skin-care arsenal made up of a handful of Biologique Recherche products and a little-known scrub from the West Hollywood beauty destination Chicet.
“I was like, Wait, what is this?” Willis recalls of the exfoliating cleanser, which she stumbled upon in her friend’s medicine cabinet. “It was really gentle and my skin looked amazing after one wash.” Fast forward two years—as unprecedented levels of stress and protective masks have caused her complexion to flare-up—and the milk-, egg whites-, and spearmint leaf-based formula has become more essential than ever. “My skin was feeling attacked,” admits Willis, who now turns to the buffing treatment nightly to remove any buildup—and help bridge the gap until she’s able to return to her beloved Rescue Spa in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. “It’s become my go-to, especially now that I can’t get a facial.” Maskne, it seems, has met its match.
