Few items of clothing scream the early aughts louder than a pair of low-rise cargo pants. A mainstay in the wardrobes of pop icons Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears, they were one of the decade’s defining trends. Baggy and covered in pockets, the utility trousers added a casual flair to any outfit but eventually fell out of fashion. Lately, the look has been revived by millennial and Gen Z celebrities who look to the past for inspiration. Rihanna, Bella Hadid, and Kendall Jenner have made them a part of their wardrobes, and brands like Balenciaga and Balmain sent them down the fall 2020 runways.
Given the resurgence, it’s only natural that style-conscious stars are jumping on the bandwagon. Case in point: when Lily-Rose Depp stepped out yesterday in Paris for a quiet stroll, she did so in American Vintage’s bright blue Tineborow cargo jeans. Styled with a cropped white t-shirt, Prada mini-purse, Air Jordan sneakers, and a face shielding mask, Depp’s outfit was chic while respecting the city’s health guidelines. With her rectangular Chanel sunglasses and ponytail secured by a white scrunchie, Depp looked the part of ’00s It girl.
Spotted earlier this week in a vintage Loro Piana bomber jacket while out with mom Vanessa Paradis, Depp is leaning into old school trends. Her success pulling off cargo pants opens the door for other experiments in 2000s style. Only time will tell if she’ll pull out a plaid skort next or give the cropped cardigan a refresh. No matter what Depp wears, it’s sure to look good.
